Getting Started with BatterUp

Overview

The National Math Bee is an online math tournament in which students in grades one through six compete in any or all of the four basic math categories, including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.

The National Math Bee is powered by the educational math game BatterUp

Game Play

School classrooms are divided up into teams of 3 to 5 students. As each student plays BatterUp, that student is awarded a batting average based on both the speed and accuracy of responses to math problems in the game. That student's batting average is then averaged together with other students on the same team. The result is a team batting average.

Tournament Competition

Teams compete through four tournament phases (Classroom, School, District, and State competition). For each grade, the top 3 teams in each math mode (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division) from each state are then invited to the National Math Bee championship event.

Performance Reports

Teachers monitor the progress of their teams and individual students using online performance reports. Teachers may also compare their classroom's performance to others across the nation using norm-referenced reports.

Costs

The BatterUp software, tournament registration, and performance reports are free to schools.

A student registration fee of $1 per month ($8 per school year) is required for each player. Parents may submit payment online for their child's registration fee by selecting the
"I need to register my child to play at school" link on the home page.

Since registration fees are submitted through the donation section of the National Math Bee website, they may be paid by anyone; friends, family, schools, local businesses, or national sponsors.
